OSRS Farming Money Making Guide
This OSRS Farming Money Making Guide lists and explains the most profitable money making methods wit...
Like most skills in Old School RuneScape, training Smithing using the fastest methods often demands a significant amount of gold. These methods prioritize speed over profit, meaning you’ll usually take a loss in exchange for quicker experience rates. On the other hand, more profitable methods tend to be slower and can still require a decent capital to get started. Ultimately, the best method depends on whether you value efficiency or GP more at your current stage in the game.
Players with 55 magic who also want to train magic can high alch the metal items they get after smithing. Since the high alch value of most metal items is higher than the grand exchange price, this can be used to cut costs while getting decent magic XP. It’s possible to alch 1-2 items efficiently on the run from the anvil back to the bank. You should equip the staff of fire and bring nature runes to do this method well.
This quest is quite short and easy to complete. It requires 10 mining and the ability to run from level 57 ice warriors and level 53 ice giants. Players with these requirements should complete this quest first when starting smithing training.

Requirement: 43 magic
Players with 43 magic can cast superheat item, which can smelt a bar from anywhere at the normal ore cost. It requires 1 nature rune and 4 fire runes. The main disadvantage of this method is that the superheat item does not auto-cast, so the player has to cast the spell on each ore in the inventory manually, making it click-intensive.
Bars | level | Ores required | GP per hour | XP per hour (smithing XP and magic XP) | Material cost (per hour) |
Mithril bar | 50 | 1 mithril ore and 4 coal | 44,320 | 41,500 and 73,405 | 1,155,090 |
Adamantite bar | 70 | 1 adamantite ore and 6 coal | 139,100 | 44,088 and 60,897 | 2,377,700 |
Runite bar | 85 | 1 runite ore and 8 coal | 565,800 | 57,450 and 60,897 | 13,394,050 |
With the dwarven stout, players can boost from 98 to 99 smithing and start to smith rune items like rune platelegs, rune plateskirts, and rune 2h swords. Players would have to drink a dwarven stout every minute to maintain 99 smithing and this adds to the cost of using this method. Currently, the most profitable rune item to smith is the Rune 2h sword.
Players will get 202,500 smithing XP per hour from smithing rune 2h swords.
Players will get 635,400 GP per hour from smithing rune 2h swords from making 900 rune 2h swords per hour. This requires 2,700 Runite bars worth 33,104,700 GP.
Smelting bars is the most AFK method of training smithing, and most of the options available are also quite profitable. To use any of these methods, you should bank a lot of the ores beforehand and then head to a furnace close to the bank, like the Edgeville furnace, to start smelting them.
Bars | level | Ores required | GP per hour | XP per hour | Material cost (per hour) |
Bronze bar | 1 | 1 tin ore and 1 copper ore | 69,600 | 4,960 | 27,000 |
Iron bar | 15 | 1 Iron ore | 48,832 | 12,250 | 209,888 |
Silver bar | 20 | 1 Silver ore | 67,620 | 13,426 | 58,800 |
Steel bar | 30 | 1 iron ore and 2 coal | 79,825 | 13,563 | 383,625 |
Gold bar | 40 | 1 gold bar | -30,380 | 22,050 | 146,020 |
Runite bar | 85 | 1 runite ore and 8 coal | 300,400 | 20,000 | 4,109,200 |
