Farming is a skill that allows players to plant and harvest different types of crops. These crops grow in different durations even if the player logs out, which is why farming can still be trained effectively even with very little in-game time. The harvested items have several uses, especially on Ironman accounts, or they can be sold to the grand exchange to cut costs on normal accounts. Players need to plan to maximize their farming experience; the best methods and planning have been thoroughly explained in this guide.

Compost

Compost is used to reduce the chances of a farming patch becoming diseased. There are several tiers of compost: regular compost, supercompost, or ultracompost, all of which can be made by the player or bought from different farming shops or the grand exchange. Here is how to make each type of compost:

• Compost can also be obtained by placing 15 weeds into one of the compost bins. 
• Supercompost can be obtained by filling the compost bin with better farming produce like Watermelons or Coconuts. 
• Ultracompost can be produced by adding 25 volcanic ashes to a full bin of supercompost or adding two volcanic ashes to a bucket of supercompost. 

Fastest Methods of Training Farming

Questing: Level 1-37 Farming

The best way to start training farming is by doing quests that have little to no requirement but also give farming experience, these include:

• Freeing the Goblin general (recipe for disaster): this quest requires the completion of another’s cook and goblin diplomacy, both of which are easy and quick to complete. It offers 1,000 farming experience upon completion, taking the player to level 9 farming.

• Fairytale I: this quest has more requirements, requiring the completion of Lost City and Nature spirit but offers up to 3,500 farming experience, taking the player up to 20 farming.

• Forgettable Tale: It requires 22 cooking, 17 farming, and completion of the Giant Dwarf and fishing contest. It offers 5,000 farming experience upon completion, taking the player up to 26 farming.

• The Garden of Death: It requires 20 farming, it rewards the player with 10,000 farming experience, taking the player up to 33 farming.

• Enlightened Journey: It requires 20 quest point, 20 firemaking, 30 farming, and 36 crafting. It gives 3,000 farming experience, taking the player 35 farming.

• My Arm’s Big Adventure: This quest has relatively more requirements but since farming is a low skill to train at the start it can be a good alternative. It requires 29 farming, 10 woodcutting, and completing Eadgar’s Ruse, The Feud, and Jungle Potion. It rewards the player with 5,000 farming experience.

Tree Runs: Level 37–99 Farming

Doing tree runs is the most effective way of training farming, it involves periodically traveling to different locations to efficiently plant and harvest crops. This is the fastest way of training farming when compared with the effort but in reality, only one or two tree runs can be done in a day for a maximum of 220,000 farming experience with only about 10 minutes of effort.

To get the best experience rates when doing tree runs, the player should plant the highest-tier regular tree, fruit tree, hardwood tree saplings, and special tree saplings for their level in as many locations as possible, then wait till they are grown (some might take more than 3 days to grow). After the trees have grown, the player should check the health to get farming experience, pay the gardener to chop down the tree, and then replant. This process should be repeated for all patches till they have all been checked and replanted.

Players are rewarded 14 farming XP for planting Acorn seeds, which requires 1 basket of tomatoes for protection.

It takes 3 hours and 20 minutes to grow and rewards the player with another 467.3 farming experience when checked, for a total of 481.3.

Players are rewarded 25 farming XP for planting Willow seeds, which requires 1 basket of apples for protection.

How to do a farm run at level 37 farming

Inventory Setup/items needed at 37 Farming

• 5 trees: At level 37 farming, you should plant willow seed to get the best experience rates there are six tree patches, but the sixth patch is in the farming guide which requires 65 farming to access
• 4 fruit trees: At level 35 farming, you should plant Banana seeds. There are also six fruit tree patches, but one is in the farming guild that requires 85 farming to access.
• 3 hardwood
• Spade
• Payments in bank notes
• Coins
• Teleport to Taverly, Catherby, Lumbridge teleport, and Varrock teleport.
• Ring of wealth or slayer ring to get the spirit tree and use it to get to Tree Gnome Stronghold
• Teleport to Falador for the Taverly patch, and a teleport to Ardougne or Rimmington for the Brimhaven patch.
• Digsite pendant or digsite teleport for hardwood trees
• Rake stored at a tool leprechaun

A Farm Run At Level 37 Farming

1. Teleport to Falador Park with the ring of wealth. Plant a tree here
2. Teleport to Tarverley and run east to the tree patch. Plant a tree here
3. Teleport to Lumbridge, exit the city through the Lumbridge Castle walls and run north to the tree patch as shown below. Plant a tree
4. Teleport to Varrock, run north, and then northeast to the tree patch as shown below. Plant a tree here.
5. Go to the stronghold cave from the spirit tree or through the slayer ring. Plant a tree here.
6. Go to the spirit tree northeast of the Stronghold Cave, and plant a fruit tree here.
7. Use the Spirit tree to teleport to the Tree Gnome Village, Run to the southwest corner and squeeze through the entrance. Use Elkoy to navigate through the maze quickly then run southwest to the fruit tree patch. Plant a tree.
8. Teleport to catherby and run east of the fruit tree patch near the fishing spots, plant a tree here.
9. Go to Brimhaven fruit tee patch, and plant there.
10. Teleport to the Digsite. Run to the barge, quick-travel to Fossil Island, and run to the hardwood tree patches north. Plant hardwood here
11. Teleport to Lietya with the teleport crystal and plant your last fruit tree. 
12. Repeat the steps to check tree health and replant all seeds.

Experience Rates and cost of Training Farming with tree runs

At level 35, A good tree run consists of 5 Willow seeds, 4 banana seeds, and 2 teak trees, Willow trees grant 7,282.5 farming experience every 4 hours, Banana seeds grant 7,000 farming experience every 16 hours and the Teak seeds grant 29,160 farming experience every 74 hours and 40 minutes. This averages 40,000 farming experience per day doing 2 tree runs each day when using payments. This costs 15,000 GP each day.

At 70 farming, A tree run consisting of 6 yew trees, 5 palm trees, and 4 mahogany trees, takes around 5 minutes. The run gives a total of 115,000 Farming experience per day when using payments. This costs around 600,000 GP each day.

At 85 farming, A tree run consisting of 6 magic trees, 6 dragonfruit trees, 1 calquat tree, and 1 celastrus tree takes around 5 minutes and 20 seconds. The run gives a total of 215,761.3 Farming experience per day when using payments. This costs 2.5M GP each day.

Using this method, it will take the player about 67 days, to get 99 farming and cost around 120M OSRS GP. 

Alternative Farming Methods

Tithe Farm

The Tithe Farm can be found in Hosidius. It involves planting seeds, watering them frequently, and harvesting them quickly to prevent them from withering, most players dislike this method of training farming however, it might be a good substitute if you'd rather not participate in farm runs. Requirements Of the Tithe Farm minigame

Players must have at least 34 farming to participate in the tithe farm. There are three types of seeds found on the table in the tithe farm, and at least one type is needed to participate; the Golovanova seed has the lowest farming requirement of 34. 

XP Rates per hour when Playing the Tithe Farm Minigame

The experience rates below assume you are wearing the full farmer's outfit. If you wear the full outfit, you should expect a 2.5% deduction from the experience rates below.

When using the fastest method described above:

• At level 34 farming, when using Golovanova seeds, you should expect to get 28,000 XP per hour.
• At level 54 farming, when using Bologano seeds, you should expect 65,000 XP per hour.
• At level 74 farming, when using Logavano seeds, you should expect 100,000 XP per hour.
